History
Roompot is a concept unto itself, and one that truly defines the recreational tourism branch. The name is derived from the tideway and sandbank in the mouth of the Eastern Scheldt estuary, called ‘De Roompot’.
Over the past 40 years, the enterprise has grown from a simple campsite to an umbrella organisation comprising some 35 businesses, most of them in the form of private limited liability corporations. The core business consists of providing qualitatively perfect holidays for the following target groups: families with young children, two-person households (50+), villa guests, campsite guests, Dutch and German guests, businesses and communities.
A few highlights of Roompot history:
Till 1960 |
Recreation and tourism were traditionally concentrated around the Walcheren coast, the coast of Schouwen-Duiveland and the Zeeland coast of in Flanders. Following completion of the Delta Works and the creation of the Veerse lake, the former island of Noord-Beveland is more easily accessible for many more people. |
1965 |
Mr van de Maas and Mr P. Kortekaas begin developing 3 hectares of land bordering the Eastern Scheldt near the town of Kamperland. On 1 April 1965 they establish a campsite there: ‘De Roompot’. |
1975 |
Expansion of the campgrounds to 1400 campsites, construction of a new restaurant (now a buffet restaurant) and completion of the first covered swimming pool of any camping facility in the Netherlands – all on 27 hectares of land. The expansion earns the campsite the highest number of ANWB (Royal Dutch Touring Club) stars and flags upon introduction of this ratings classification. |
1983 |
A new investment: opening of the first-ever subtropical swimming paradise and wave pool in the south-western Netherlands. |
1986 |
Following completion of the Delta Works, the newly constructed work harbour can be developed as the Roompot Marina, situated right alongside the campsite with its swimming paradise. Villas can be built abutting the harbour, giving a view out onto the changing tides. With the construction and sale of these villas, Roompot real estate is born, later to become Orisant Makelaardij. This estate agency has a strong position in the holiday and residential property market in Zeeland. |
1990 |
Completion of the Kamperland Roompot, now known as Roompot Beach Resort. This year also sees the development of plans for the new villa park of Zeeland Village in Scharrendijke. This park comprises 220 villas plus a facilities centre. Acquisition and renovation of De Zandput camp grounds in the village of Vrouwenpolder, which now has a total of 600 campsites, a facilities centre and a beach pavilion. Acquisition of the Rabo in Zeeland Flanders, with a portfolio of 300 rental villas on the Zeeland Flanders coast. Today it operates under the name Vlaanderen Vakanties, with offices in Nieuwvliet and Cadzand-Bad. |
1996 |
Acquisition of Hof Domburg (150 villas, 450 campsites and 60 beachside studios) and De Parel leisure centre (swimming pool, theatre, dining facilities and health and sports facilities). |
